The meal was at the "Somilan Steak House" on Church street, a nice and cheerful place with Naga and Mizo inspired interiors. We left the ordering to the expert, with the only inputs being the proteins of choice and the spice levels.
We started with an amazing salad called Shinju (a mixed veg salad that can be fiery). This was a combination of shredded cabbage, some lentils, and some fiery spices. It was delicious and you could keep eating this. This would be the perfect accompaniment with your evening drink, and would also be very healthy way to fill up. We had asked for "medium" spice, but the traditional version is supposed to be quite hot.
Next was more of an Indo-Chinese Chilly Beef - very nicely done. We ordered a 5 spice fish starter as non-spicy - and it completely cut out the chilly but yet had a fair bit of flavors of the ginger/ garlic and other greens that went into the dish.
The highlight was the "Smoked pork with bamboo shoots" starter we ordered. The pork was so delicious - the smokey barbeque flavor combined with the Naga spices, greens and bamboo shoots. Would highly recommend this to any pork lover.
Continuing the bamboo shoots theme was the "Fried fish with bamboo shoots curry" we ordered on the main course. Superb flavors and this was wiped out in no time.
We think North east and imagine there to be no vegetarian food, so were surprised to eat a new type of daal - the "Utti" - slow braised peas prepared in a thick gravy with lots of greens in it. There were a couple of other Veg items on the menu, but as we were generally meat eaters on the table, we ordered just this one veg dish (and the Shinju salad).
For the pork eaters - we ordered the "Smoked Pork with Anishi" as the main course (with rice). This was a delicious dish combining the smoked pork with Fermented Yam leaf! Again - the smoked flavor come through and dominated the dish, and it was perfect.
Along with the food, there are traditionally a variety of chutneys/ relishes eaten. We ordered two of them - the first was the "Ironba" - which comprised of mashed potato, fermented fish, boiled veggies and bamboo shoots. The other was the Naga Tomato Onion chutney. Both the chutneys were asked to be medium spiced, else they can be pretty potent (and delicious).
We spent close to an hour or two ordering, eating, talking learning and it was a fabulous dinner.
This meal has reignited the desire to visit the North East part of the country, and I hope to do so soon!
