I visited Coromandel Café in Pondicherry with my mom and two sisters, and we were quite taken aback by the way we were treated by one of the hosts. When we arrived, he asked whether we wanted food or just tea/coffee. When we replied “coffee,” he directed us to sit outside with a fan — without even asking where we’d prefer to sit. At the moment, we went along with it, but later realized that his tone and manner felt unnecessarily dismissive and, frankly, discriminatory.Soon after, we started getting bitten by several mosquitoes outside. I went inside and mentioned it to another staff member, who immediately said it was fine for us to move indoors. We shifted in without any problem. When we went inside, we noticed that the guests seated indoors were foreigners, which only reinforced how uncomfortable that earlier interaction felt.The food and coffee were genuinely good, and our server inside was polite but this initial experience really killed the overall vibe. As a family, we’ve never experienced such treatment at any café or restaurant before. It was surprising and disappointing, especially from a place known for its ambience and service. A little more courtesy and warmth would have made all the difference.
