After seeing St. John's Church, come for a meal. The Mediterranean cuisine is on the menu at this restaurant. Tasting nicely cooked hummus, hummus salads and sheek kebabs is what many clients recommend. You will be offered such food as good creamy hummus and tasty baklava, don't hesitate to try them. We were guided to Zaks by our walkman Mansoor Ali, of 'Bangalore by foot' walking tours. This was part of their Christmas eve walk. The joint is run by a family of Syrian descent. They immigrated to India in 1906, first to Hyderabad, Pakistan; then to Mumbai before finally settling down in namma Bengaluru. We were hosted by the third and fourth generation. The elder son confessed to being fluent in Tamil more so than in Arabic. Assimilation ho toh aisa, inshallah! The cuisine on offer was a Syrian styled mediterranean buffet. The father was a charming man with a throaty, husky voice. He regaled us with tales of the diaspora. They were initially mistaken for Egyptian migrants because no one knew where Syria was. The restaurant started at the behest of the students from the middle East. It was an experiment to feed the nostalgia that comes through food. They've kept their palate true to taste with little-to-no fanfare and advertising. It's one of those gems for 'those in the know'. A quaint, authentic, family owned and operated small business. The fattoush salad is dressed in olive oil and lime giving it a zesty, tangy flavour. The falafel was crunchy on the outside and smooth, consistent and green on the inside.
