On our last day in Shimla—a well-deserved riding break day—my daughter and I decided to spend the morning lazing around Mall Road. While hunting for a legendary lunch spot, Wake & Bake kept popping up at the top of every recommendation list. Intrigued by the hype, we decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the reputation, especially when compared to the high cafe standards we are used to in Bangalore. The vibrant yellow exterior creates a great first impression, but the reality inside is different.. The Ambience & Comfort (or Lack Thereof). The cafe is housed in a lovely 3-level heritage building dressed in a warm, inviting yellow. It draws a young, energetic crowd. However, the physical setup is incredibly uncomfortable. Each floor holds about three large tables, but the wooden bench seats are only about 12 inches deep and completely un-cushioned. It is physically impossible to sit back, relax, and enjoy a long, lazy lunch on seats that shallow. The design practically forces you to eat and leave quickly. The Food. The menu leans heavily toward standard fast food. We ordered a chicken pizza, a salad, and a starter—which ironically arrived at the very end of the meal. The starter was a four-piece cheese-topped bread. Overall, the food was remarkably average. The flavors were quite bland, to the point where we had to aggressively top everything up with every single sauce and shaker available on the table just to give it some kick. On the positive side, the prices are decent and the young staff members are quite fit and friendly, constantly climbing up and down those three flights of stairs. Major Hygiene Issues & After-Effects. The real trouble started after we left. My daughter lost her appetite completely, skipped dinner, and by midnight, I woke up to the sound of her throwing up. She had a terrible morning following that, and our entire motorcycle ride back to Chandigarh was spent trying to keep her hydrated with Electrolytes Thinking back, the culprit was almost certainly the dairy. I distinctly remember spotting the staff carrying a massive wheel of cheese around bare-handed, which is a huge hygiene lapse for any kitchen handling fresh food. Final Verdict. While the building looks great in photos and the staff is pleasant, Wake & Bake is heavily overhyped. Between the incredibly uncomfortable seating, mediocre food flavors, and severe food safety concerns, I cannot recommend it. If you're riding or traveling the next day, eat elsewhere—it's simply not worth the risk. Food is good but the service was bad. Ordered white sauce pasta and they gave pink pasta and wanted us to eat it. When we refused he told that white pasta will take another 20 mins. Then they got us waffles when we had asked for crepes and then insisted that we had ordered waffles and all this after writing down our order on a paper . Also added waffles to our bill. N this mix up was happening at each and every table.
