Renai is a place that introduced me to the concept of Buffets in Kochi. I have been using this restaurant- Pavillion since 2006 and by now atleast 10 to 15 times. Until 2013, it was one of the best restaurants, but since 2013 there was a constant decline in their standards. The waiters started behaving very arrogantly, service standards plummeted rapidly and even choice of food became very limited. By 2016, I stopped visiting due to the poor standards. It was nearly after 2 years, I thought to give a try recently and visited a week back. I am so happy to see the restaurant is back to its original standards and deserves a full 5 stars here. The choices of food have improved and at par with many premium brands, even if it's only a 4 star hotel. Of course, the restaurant itself needs an overhaul as the sidewalls, furniture, and layout etc are bit cheap and that of 1990s fashion. But in terms of food choices and selection, it stands wellThey have 6 Non Veg options and 10 Veg options which is really good. Renai is one of the few restaurants that offer Pork as an item in the buffet and it's really good. The options were a pork dish (Pork Ullatiyathu, a typical Kerala specialty), Beef Tenderloin Steak (Continental style), Chemeen Curry (Prawns curry in typical Kerala style with roasted coconut gravy), Kadai Chicken (North Indian style), Alleppey Fish Curry (with a side combo of Kappa- mashed Tapioca) and Mutton Biriyani. Vegetarians have a huge choice with one Pasta option, Steamed veggies and Grilled potatoes, Lasagna, Cashew Paneer Curry, Veg Stew, Mixed Veg Jalfrezi, Dal Tadkah, Kerala style Avial and Papaya Thoran (Stir-fried Papaya). The rice choices were Kashmiri Peas Pulao, Plain Steamed Rice and Hong Kong styled fried rice (Veg) apart from the Mutton Biriyani in non-veg side. The Salad area was really huge. Around 4 main Veg salads and 4 Non-veg salads were there. The Egg Salad and Chicken Salami were really good. Chicken Mayo Salad was average and there was a Beef salad which I didn't try.Apart from wide range of pickles, curds, cold pasta, beetroot slices and dips, there was an option for comfort foods like Curd Rice and Dahi Vada offered.  Choice of freshly made Appams, Naans, Butter Naans, Kerala Paratha and Tandoori Roti on the table. Appam of Renai is iconic and that goes well with their Veg stew. One of the complaints of Renai previously was its poor quality and choice of desserts. And its one area they improved rapidly or perhaps lavishly overhauled. The choices of desserts now stand equal to likes of Marriott or similar higher end brands. There was a sugar-free Custard for diabetic patients which was a good thought. An Apple Gateaux, assorted cream pastries (Chocolate, Vanilla, Butterscotch), Creme Caramel, Butterscotch Praline Mousse, Chocolate Tarts, Brownies, Bread pudding, Pineapple Muffins were some of the offerings in the lavish dessert counter. Apart from these, they had Mixed fruit salad, Ada Payasam, Gulab Jamun and 2 Ice creams (Chocolate and Vanilla) with a wide choice of toppings and Chocolate sauce.Overall, its damn good buffet and almost all items in the buffet has its best authentic tastes. Ofcourse Renai was famous for its Kerala specialties and those Kerala dishes were simply outstanding. And with such a lavish spread, the rate is less than 700 (inclusive of tax), makes the buffet, one of the outstanding options in the city. And the issues of service has completely being rectified with waiters being constantly supporting each table and prompt clearing of tables.Overall, I do recommend.
