We went to The Bread Bar in Deonar for breakfast on 23 October 2025 while on a Diwali family holiday in Mumbai. We saw a cat with a collar around its neck inside the restaurant. My 12 year old, who is attracted to pets, wanted to play so we checked with the staff whether the cat is vaccinated or not. The staff clearly confirmed that the cat is vaccinated. My child patted the cat and the cat scratched him in his left hand and bit his right hand. An avid cat lover he didn't show me the marks until we boarded an Uber for our next destination. On seeing blood we immediately called up the owner of the Bread Bar. She said that the cat is a Stray Cat and advised to take our child to a hospital. Being in a new city, we're anxious and started seeking help. We were first sent to Indu clinic in Colaba where we found the Doctor on leave. From there we were told to go to Bombay Hospital since there is an emergency to cater to such cases inspite of most of the city Doctors on leave. My kid and we underwent 3 hours of horrendous experience, involving multiple injections and pain. The resident emegency team in the hospital gave him anti rabies injection and multiple immuno shots under the skin where the cat scratched and bit. It was a very painful and lengthy process undertaken in an OT as the doctor had to inject the medicine in the tissues surrounding the area where there were scratches. Our child was in tremendous pain and screamed for more than 30 mins and was shivering and crying throughout the process. It was a very traumatic experience for us all. We had to give OT charges and vaccine cost amounting to more than Rs. 5000/-. The rest of the rabbies vaccine will have to be taken as per the given schedule. All these happened because the staff mislead us and ruined our entire day and caused immense physical and emotional pain to our child and us as a family. Till date we are unable to understand how a stray cat which roams around the entire neighborhood was allowed to enter the eating area of a restaurant and on specific enquiry, one of the waiters confirmed that the cat is vaccinates. Everyone saw us but did not caution us. We would request the owner not to allow the cat inside the restaurant if it cannot be ensured that the cat is vaccinated and safe. A stray cat in a restaurant also compromises its hygiene and cleanliness. Would request the owner to ensure that the waiters/ staff in the restaurant are made liable for sharing false assurance and information with customers like us. Hope the cat receives due care and no other kid/ person visiting The Bread Bar get exposed to the risk of a stray animal inside the restaurant. Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 1 Service: Dine in
