Sorbo: Gurugram's New Moroccan SipGurugram's culinary landscape is, for better or worse, ever-evolving. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on the city’s gastronomic pulse, a new establishment pops up, promising a fresh take on something you thought you knew. My recent sojourn led me to Sorbo, a new Moroccan-inspired restaurant on Golf Course Road, and I must confess, it left me rather intrigued. Not Your Grandfather's MoroccoOne expects a Moroccan restaurant to be a riot of vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and perhaps the faint scent of shisha. Sorbo, however, defies these clichés with an almost audacious grace. The name itself, I learned, comes from the Spanish for "sip," hinting at a focus on beverages. And indeed, they've embraced a more contemporary aesthetic, opting for subtle pastel tones and a fresh, uncluttered ambiance. It’s a departure, certainly, but a rather pleasant one, blending modern design with a whisper of traditional influences. The space, accommodating up to 160 guests with a generous outdoor terrace, feels both expansive and intimate, quite a feat.A Menu of Many MindsThe menu at Sorbo is where things get truly interesting. While there’s a clear nod to Morocco, particularly in the "Marrakesh" section featuring ten Moroccan specialties, the kitchen isn't afraid to wander. You’ll find Mediterranean and Pan-Asian influences woven into the tapestry, alongside, rather surprisingly, handmade pastas and authentic Napoletana pizzas. It's a diverse offering, with sections like Tapas Food, Small Plates, Large Plates, Toast and Tacos, Salads, and Bowls to share. This multi-cuisine approach could, in lesser hands, lead to a muddled experience. Here, it largely works, offering something for almost every palate.Sips and Savories That SangNow, to the heart of the matter: what did I actually eat and drink? The cocktails at Sorbo deserve a special mention. The name, after all, isn't just a clever play on words. I started with A Tale of Two Cities, a fascinating concoction of Vodka, Aperol, and a house-made Chili Caramel Cordial. It was a delightful dance of sweet, spicy, and bitter, truly capturing a vibrant essence. Next, the Picante arrived, a tequila-based number shaken with lime juice, cilantro, and an orange & red chilli-infused honey, served with orange and pepper salt. It was zesty, subtly fiery, and perfectly balanced – a genuine highlight.Moving onto the food, the Chicken & Cheese Adana Kebab was a fine start, the ground chicken seekh perfectly complemented by a creamy hummus. From the sushi section, the Truffle Chicken Roll with Jap mayo, spring onion, and sesame was an unexpected pleasure, the truffle adding a luxurious earthy note. The Merguez Chicken Pide with homemade chicken sausage, feta, and walnut was a satisfyingly robust dish, a testament to their ability to execute different culinary styles. And for those who prefer something with a kick, the Kung Pao, whether with tofu or chicken, was a well-executed rendition of the house special hot sauce served with buttered fried rice. Finally, the Rocher Hazelnut Belgium Cake for dessert. A decadent affair, with its chocolate sponge, hazelnut ganache, candied hazelnut, and chocolate crème diplomat, it was the perfect sweet crescendo to the meal.A Notable AdditionSorbo, with its refined cuisine and inviting atmosphere, certainly carves out a niche for itself on Gurugram’s ever-expanding dining map. While the average cost of Rs 4000 for two might place it on the higher end, the quality of ingredients, the inventive cocktails, and the sheer breadth of the menu justify the indulgence. Operating from 1 PM to 2 AM, it's a versatile spot, whether you’re looking for a leisurely lunch, a spirited evening, or a late-night bite.Sorbo isn't just another restaurant; it’s an experience that’s both familiar and surprising, much like Gurugram itself. I, for one, shall certainly be returning for another "sip."
