In 2001, while visiting Ahmedabad with my parents, my food enthusiast father decided to take me on a food crawl across the city. Of the many places he introduced me to, there was an ordinary-looking store with a variety of takes on 'kharek' (dried dates). As a child, I had always disliked the sticky sweetness of dates so when dad brought me here, I was apprehensive. The shopkeeper worked in a perfected rhythm: chopped khareks, chutneys, powders and more mixed into a bowl and put in front of me. I took a tentative bite and i was amazed. The dry, unappealing kharek transformed: it was bursting with sweet, tangy and spicy flavours & tasted nothing like the dates I had always avoided. Recently, as I wandered the streets of Ahmedabad again, the memory of that 'kharek wala' resurfaced. And I found it with my dad’s help! Welcome to @manmohan_kharek a small heritage shop in Navrangpura since 1960 headed by Manishbhai. This is a treasure trove of textures and flavours waiting to be discovered, beckoning you to pack up goodies and take them home. Visited by politicians, celebrities, tourists and locals alike, this is a great social leveller, like any good local food joint should be! Here are my favourites: Mukhwas: Masala bor. Ahmedabad is dotted with mukhwas shops, but this one stands out for its freshness and quality. Kharek Churan: Soaked overnight with the seeds removed, the kharek is cut, stuffed and sprinkled with pomegranate churan, chutney & a  masala blend. My favourites- lemon and ginger. For the adventurous, there's chocolate almond kharek or pineapple kharek. Hajma Hajam: A must-try, refreshing drink to help digest those heavy Amdavadi meals. Take home & enjoy with a dash of lime in water or soda. Rediscovering this spot brought back memories from that first taste years ago. It reminded me that while there’s a joy in exploring new places, rediscovering old spots and returning to tastes and flavours holds a charm of its own.
