Ram Ashraya in Matunga has a legendary name, but the actual dining experience feels stuck in the past—and not in a good way. The food was average across the board. I ordered the Ghee Roast Onion Mysore Dosa, which was just okay in taste. The masala dosa and neer dosa were also average, lacking depth and authentic flavor. The biggest letdown was the sambhar, which had almost no taste at all—a serious miss for a South Indian restaurant. To make matters worse, the sambhar and chutneys are served in extremely small bowls, roughly 30–40 ml each. This felt unnecessarily stingy and was a huge disappointment, especially when you’re already waiting so long. You’re made to wait 30–40 minutes in the name of “authentic food,” but the authenticity is missing on the plate. The only item I genuinely liked was the chaas, which was refreshing and well-prepared. One positive point is that service is fast once you’re seated, and the staff works efficiently. Overall: A lot of hype, long waiting time, average food, tasteless sambhar, and disappointing portion sizes. Ram Ashraya seems to be surviving on reputation rather than quality. If you’re visiting for authentic South Indian food, keep your expectations low—or consider better options in Matunga.
