Ottimo tries so hard to be an Italian fine dining experience. And yes, at that price point, absolutely it should be. The chef's have learned well their craft and the food indeed is put together meticulously and presented photo-ready. But it doesn't take much to quickly realize the something is off. Something feels feigned. It gets to a point where it is a bit awkward even. Don't get me wrong. The food tastes good. The bread is warm. The salad is fresh. The burrata and mozzarella all feel good. Each dish is put togther to form a "bite" or a specific taste profile and largely it comes across as bespoke and unique. Although not perfect, I do think this is one of the better Italian joints in Chennai. So I'll let that be. Now let's talk about the service. You have what it seems to be 15+ chefs in the open kitchen all standing around doing nothing, while our food takes 30+ mins to create. I wasn't sure what was taking so long. And our servers... many there were but whenever we needed one, they would disappear. It took us 20 mins just to find someone so that we could pay. We could've literally walked out without getting noticed. And remember, they want to be fine dining right? Atmosphere feels special. The corridor into the main dining area and open kitchen feels cozy and warm. Good job here. But I would've taken it just a bit farther to bring in Italian flares. The atmosphere quickly blends into the traditional hotel restaurant set up - white table cloth, cushy chairs, etc. Perhaps go for a bit more of a rustic feel? If you live in Chennai, Ottimo is worth a visit. But I'd say you better really have run out of options before you do. Food: 4 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 3 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: ₹2,000+ Kid-friendliness: Not for kids.

Luxury can be understated or it can be opulent. Ottimo Cucina Italiana has the understated variety that it wears with confidence and élan that comes from a very strong foundation in food, overseen by Chef Zubin Writer, who puts a little bit of his soul into every dish that goes out of his Cucina. He possesses an instinctive genius that no books can teach. Ottimo’s clarity is in its rather muted decor of beige, cream, marble and wood, allowing the colours from the food to take centre stage, in a brilliant stroke in design. All design fascination fades into the background with the first look at my plate. Asparagus Panna Cotta. There are two stems. One green and the other white. There’s pine nuts and specks of the very precious Umbrian black truffle that make all the difference in a master dish. Prosecco precedes the Potato Nest to cleanse the palate. The nest itself, topped with salmon roe among other things. It simply disintegrates in the mouth. I delay the palate cleansing for a bit, as I want my taste buds to enjoy the extravagance for a little longer. Lobster Confit, chorizo espuma - imagine that! There’s more. This masterpiece has homemade cagliata and is topped with a green crisp made using the firm textured Carnaroli rice and spinach. Stuffed morel, with tender pea mash and cream topped with porcini mushroom dust. All ingredients come together like magic with porcini adding a small hint of umami. Finally, I come to the magical Tiramisu and simply have to follow it with a few small sips of Limoncello Di Capri. This food wins hearts via the taste buds. This is not a place for a quiet romantic dinner. Ottimo is almost always packed to capacity. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: ₹2,000+
