Having seen IPlay, it's time to have a rest at this restaurant. Chinese and Indian cuisines are to the pleasure of all clients here. You can always degust good grilled chicken, chicken biryani and shawarma at Nawaz Durbar.
This place with takeaway dishes is suitable for those guests who like to eat in a hurry. A number of reviewers have noticed that the staff is well-trained at this place. Terrific service is something that visitors note in their comments. But this spot has been rated below average by Google.
Everyone is aware some times back a cult of Talappakattu Biryani that stormed Chennai, resulting with mushrooming of small time eat outs on every street corner with a tiny space with the flashy yellow Board calling you to enjoy Talappakattu Biryani.
Before that:
Once upon a time, long time ago, ( precisely 10-15 years before) a sudden spurt of Biryani cult engulfed Chennai with lots of vendors with a big aluminium deksha (utensil) on the streets selling Hot Muslim Dum Biriyani constantly tapping the rim of the utensil and packing a plateful of Chicken Biryani for a throw away price. There were 100s of them in Royappettah and its surrounding Mirsahibpet, Triplicane areas and even on the busy junction of Richie Street, off Anaa salai , famous for its shops of electronic goods……….
At that time, may be around 2001-2002 every evening at around 6.30 to 7 p.m, a man would be waiting for his endless customers with the big aluminium Deksha full of chicken Biryani in the corner of the Velacherry junction just opposite present Bus stand. His biryani flavour was so distinct that it would spread around the entire area and you did not have ask for any direction to reach him. His biryani deksha would be empty within two hours and most of the times, I was visiting him desperately hoping to get at least two packs as takeaway but would return back home empty handed with a broken heart……
Their humble start at the Velachery junction has earned them strong reputation for their biryani and goodwill from the customers and from there on there was no turning back for them until they built a two storey building on the Velachery Bye pass road and named it Nawaz Durbar.. Their signature dish was of course Biryani, both chicken and Mutton and other mogul non vegetarian varieties like Tandoori chicken and Grilled chicken and spicy non-veg gravies and fries…………………….
But, it is said things change with time. Velachery area has seen an unprecedented development with its ever increasing population of IT professionals which witnessed mushrooming up of a number of eateries, restaurants and Hotels springing up on every other day. The people who were so busy on the Velachery junction could not get the same luck favoring them here at the newly built restaurant though the initial business was a boom here as the people of Velachery had no other option for getting their pack of Biryani but necessarily visit Nawaz Durbar. And the magic has slowly waned out and their business went straight down after the poor show by them despite having a prime place and goodwill earned earlier……
They still seem unsettled and the reasonable pricing of their dishes like the cost of Chicken Biryani for Rs 90/- and Mutton Biryani for Rs 130/- has no impact on their business prospects due to the deteriorating quality of their biryani as well as the poor ambiance and the service provided at their outlet……
The other dishes worth mentioning here are: Chicken Tandoori, Kadai Chicken, Hyderabadi Chicken, Mutton pepper fry and most of them are available for a reasonable price though the taste and quality are not of a class……………………………………..
The recent flux of Velachery’s population are hi-fi IT people and Upper Middle class that always look for a fine dining place with a quality food. Taking this factor into account, it is quite difficult for them to make a turnaround unless they show some comeback attitude with the better flavor, taste and quality biryani which is their signature dish and also by improving their ambiance and service.
