This is not a complaint about Kni Hau's food. This is about the service staff, specifically the manager.I had gone to the restaurant with my grandmother (81 years) and great-aunt (71 years). The woman at the welcome desk said the restaurant was full and I might have to wait for 30 minutes. I was fine with this because it was my fault that I didn't check in advance whether a reservation was needed. However, I requested a table sooner if possible because I had two senior citizens with me, and there was no bar area where we could wait. Some time later, the woman came and told me it would take 40-42 minutes to get a table. I said that was too long and asked if I could speak to the manager. The woman fetched him. Before I talk about his conduct, I should mention that his suit did not seem to be ironed or starched and his tie was askew. This was not the attention to detail I expected from a manager of a popular restaurant located inside an expensive hotel (Goldfinch).Anyway, I explained to him that I had two senior citizens with me and such a long waiting time would be too much for them. Now, here's what I would have done in this situation. I would have gone up to the senior citizens and said something like, 'Hello, welcome to our restaurant. We're delighted to have you, and please accept my sincere apologies for this terrible inconvenience'. Then I would have offered to bring everyone some drinks and appetisers while they waited. That is how you treat the elderly, who have paid their debt to society, and that is how you make people feel welcome. If the manager had done just this much, I'd have happily waited even an hour for a table.Instead, here's what actually happened. I explained my situation to the manager and asked him if he could help us out. In response, he said, 'I can't ask diners to leave their tables, can I?'This insolent remark alone merited an instant walkout. But for my grandmother and great-aunt's sake, I tried again while keeping my temper in check. I told the manager that because the restaurant didn't have a bar, it would be difficult to keep my grandmother and great-aunt waiting. Anyone who has cared for senior citizens in any capacity will appreciate this. Here was another opportunity for the manager to proactively make us feel welcome. Instead, he told me to speak politely to him, as though I was the one being ill-mannered.At this point, I lost my temper and told him that abdicating his responsibility to his customers was not the way to treat them. He suggested we go to another restaurant (Sa-na-dige) in the same building. I explained that I had been there many times already and had come out today specifically to check out Kni Hau. Here was yet another opportunity to make amends. Any manager worth their salt would have taken it instead of letting a new customer slip through their fingers. Instead he just said, 'I'm sorry, I can't help you' and stopped talking like a robot whose software had malfunctioned.I walked out at this point because I had had enough. I shall not be returning to this restaurant, and I advise others to stay away as well until Kni Hau and Goldfinch institute proper management training programmes. Remember that the buck stops with the person in charge. If the manager is so callous when it comes to service, who knows what else he's guilty of? He might be allowing the use of expired foodstuffs or letting minors or illegal immigrants work in the kitchens.Good service matters. Good manners matter. The worst thing about all of this is that while I expected such uncouth behaviour in Delhi, where depravity is baked into its very DNA, or Bombay, where status and money matter more than people, I didn't expect it in Mangalore. We pride ourselves on our gentility here. But clearly the influx of new money over the last decade has brought the virus of egotism and incivility here too. God help us.
