The food at Kangan is fantastic—truly excellent. In fact, it’s so good that I have far more praise than criticism when it comes to the kitchen. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the service. What is most concerning is not that the staff mean badly, but that they genuinely believe their behaviour constitutes good service—when in reality it is intrusive, overbearing, and deeply lacking in basic manners and situational awareness. I was unwell that evening, with a lingering sore throat and travel fatigue. I ordered a warm soup, a second dish, and later a chamomile tea. This should have been entirely unremarkable. Instead, the waiter argued with me about when the tea should be served, insisting it be brought after my meal rather than immediately—despite my clearly stating that I wanted it then. He repeatedly pushed back, as if soup and tea could not possibly sit on the table together. I was made to feel foolish for making a perfectly reasonable request, simply because it did not align with his preferred order of operations. While eating, I was listening to important voice notes from a business associate. Despite this being obvious—I was wearing earphones, focused, and clearly not engaging—the same waiter repeatedly approached me, stood uncomfortably close, spoke to me while I was ignoring him, and then began waving his hand close to my face to force my attention. This crossed a line. At that point, I had to physically shoo him away. He later returned, visibly irritated, to say he was “just checking if I liked the soup.” I explained—firmly—that customers do not owe staff reassurance, validation, or constant feedback. We are there to eat. If something is wrong, we will say so. If something is excellent, we will compliment it. We are not there to entertain the staff. At the end of the meal, a different member of staff was polite, calm, and professional. He kindly helped arrange takeaway for the generous portions I couldn’t finish and explained how to access my Bonvoy QR code. While we were mid-conversation, another staff member from reception abruptly intervened with, “Yes madam, how can I help you?”—interrupting without cause. When I pointed out that I was already being assisted competently, the intrusion only added to the sense of being crowded, overwhelmed, and managed rather than served. In summary: • Outstanding food • Well-intentioned but shockingly intrusive service • No understanding of personal space, timing, or basic social cues Good service is not about constant hovering, interruption, or control. It is about reading the room, respecting boundaries, and allowing guests to enjoy their meal in peace. Until that distinction is understood, the service will continue to undermine what is otherwise an excellent dining experience. Food: 4 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Price per person: ₹2,000+
