I recently visited Kunga Restaurant in Darjeeling, and it absolutely lives up to its reputation for authentic Tibetan comfort food. The first thing to know is that the place is very small — there are only about 7–8 tables, and there’s no reception or waiting area. We visited recently and had to wait about 15–20 minutes, which actually felt lucky because we saw people waiting 30 minutes or more. Waiting also means standing outside on the street in the cold Darjeeling weather, so be prepared for that. We were four friends, so we got a full table, but if you’re just two people, you’ll most likely be asked to share a table with others. The ordering process is simple and efficient. Once seated, they hand you a paper and pen and ask you to write down your order. You give it back, and the food arrives surprisingly quickly — around 10 minutes depending on the size of the order. We ordered quite a spread: Chicken and Pork Gyathuk, Chicken and Pork Thenthuk, Chicken and Pork Wanton soups, steamed chicken and pork momos, Chilly Pork, and lemon tea with honey. The Gyathuk soups clearly stood out — they tasted better than the Thenthuks because the flat noodles in Thenthuk didn’t carry the flavours as well. The momos were excellent, easily the highlight of the meal. They were so good that we could honestly have just kept ordering plate after plate of momos and been perfectly happy. The Chilly Pork was okayish, nothing particularly memorable compared to the rest of the meal. One thing I wouldn’t recommend is the lemon tea with honey. It looks tempting in the cold weather, but taste-wise it felt like a complete waste of money, taste buds, and ingredients. You’re better off going with a soda from the menu. Portions are filling for one person, and while the prices are on the slightly expensive side, they feel justified given the quality, taste, and authenticity of the food. A nice touch is that they provide both western cutlery (forks and spoons) and chopsticks, so you can eat however you prefer. One last thing to keep expectations realistic: given how cramped and constantly packed the place is, don’t expect a peaceful, slow dining experience with soothing Tibetan music in the background. It’s busy, a bit chaotic, and tables turn quickly — but the food makes it completely worth it. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ₹400–600 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 2
