The café has a limited offering of dosas, vada, idli and filter coffee. But whatever it offers is authentic, with fine ingredients and faultless. The small café is like Udupi eateries, primarily for eating, not for socializing and lingering. The masala dosa was genuinely South Indian, crisp yet soft, the potato masala filling fresh and delicious. Served with a coconut chutney, a chillie paste chutney and very authentic sambhar. I chose to eat with my hand, as there was no knife and fork. The only thing I would fault is that the food is served in disposable plates, rather than the authentic steel plates and cutĺery down South. The filter coffee, similarly, came in a tiny paper cup. It was a really small quantity, a gulp and it vanished! Overall, I'd give Iyengar's high marks for being enterprising and offering authentic South Indian fare of good quality at moderate prices. I'm really not sure why this place has such high reviews or popularity. The dosas and the filter coffee here are not even comparable to something like Anna's mess. The batter used, would crumble so easily and food was so spicy that it burned my stomach. The staff was also mostly indifferent once you paid and snooty at best. Filter coffee is bland as well. Iyengars Samayal is like an oasis in a desert; this small eat out in the midst of a Hrishikesh alley, serves fresh and very tasty idli, Vada and savvy sambar and chutneys. Apart from this the coffee is awesome. Even pongal was very tasty. The price is affordable and the place is small and well maintained, with courteous staff. Never miss if have to travel a bit more also. Worth the efforts and money.
