The notion that Avartana deserves a rank 30 spot on Asia's Top 50 list is ludicrous. The food is good, but at its heart is just an expensive version of regular Dakshini food. There are highs (a sumptuous ghee and mango pudding) and lows (a coffee ice cream 'quenelle' rock hard from the freezer). But a few mild theatrics aside, nothing is out of the ordinary. The service is neglectful and apologetic; it's such a weird thing for a restaurant in India to be ... understaffed!? Yet the friendly servers are harried and it's hard to even acquire a second beverage. This isn't how a Top 50 restaurant should conduct service. Atmosphere wise, the bright lights cast a puritanical light on affairs unto fluorescence. The chafed light fixtures and ripped carpet are laid bare for all to see and it's a relief to exit to the hotel lobby where the lights are thankfully dimmer. Food: 3 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 3
