Here’s what I found about the history of Dada Boudi Restaurant—the iconic biryani eatery based in Barrackpore, West Bengal: --- A Humble Beginning to Biryani Legend The restaurant dates back to 1961, when Ramprasad Saha, a former British police officer, opened a modest eatery near Barrackpore railway station called Janata Hindu Hotel. Initially, it catered to railway laborers and locals with simple, affordable meals . In the early 1980s, Ramprasad's grandsons Sanjib and Rajib Saha introduced biryani to the menu—initially priced at just ₹11 per plate. This move transformed the place, eventually making it a culinary landmark in the region . --- Expansion & Legacy Today, Dada Boudi operates multiple outlets, especially around Barrackpore and Sodepur, retaining popularity for its generous portions, consistent taste, and affordability . They also operate a mass-scale production facility where biryani is prepared in large handis (200–250 plates each), with cooking transitioning from gas to woodfire dum, overseen by longtime associate Md Kalim Khan since 1988 . --- What’s the Signature Style? Dada Boudi’s biryani is famed for its rich, oily texture, large potatoes, and equally generous meat portions—catering especially to fans of hearty, spice-forward biryani . It blends local tastes—like a desire for bolder, spicier food especially among North 24 Parganas—to create its distinctive flavor profile . --- Rivalry & Reputation Locals across Reddit display varying views. Supporters proudly declare Dada Boudi’s legendary status: > “I live in Barrackpore and I have eaten from Dada Boudi even when Biriyani was priced at 50/-... it is delicious even now. Period.” But some critics argue the hype overpowered the quality, especially after expansion: > “It is the most overhyped and overpriced place... merely spiced rice with ghee, a large piece of meat, and a potato.” Others note its popularity especially surged in recent years thanks to food vloggers and social media attention . --- Summary Table Feature Details Founded 1961 as Janata Hindu Hotel by Ramprasad Saha Biryani Introduction Early 1980s by Saha brothers (Sanjib & Rajib) Cooking Style Gas cooking woodfire dum, large handis Signature Flavor Rich, oily, generous portions with potato Popularity Notes Multiple outlets, strong social media presence Public Opinion Mixed—beloved by many, criticized by some for overhype Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ₹200–400 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Chicken Biriyani & Mutton Biryani, Chicken Tandoori and Masala Lemonade, Dada Boudi Biriyani, Chicken Reshmi Kebab, Reshmi Kabab, Cheese Kulcha Chicken Birthday Paneer Lababdar

Tried Mutton Biryani and Thai Fish Biryani is good and flavourful, and has big chunky pieces well cooked till tender, soft and juicy. Complimentary onion sald with chatni. Raita was orders seperately, it was nice and fresh. It was just like authentic kolkata style biryani. Briyani was a little overhyped. On weekends the place is over crowded. Please come with some buffer time to 30-60 mins. Tried Thai Fish. Good fried fish strips tossed in sweet and spicy sauce with lemongrass and gondhoraj lebu. Little the taste Overall it's a good place to eat with friends and family. One plate is sufficient for 2 people.
