Cafe Madras is one of the oldest and most well known restaurants for South Indian snacks and mini- meals. The taste and quality have stood the test of time. I have been a regular visitor for many years and recently had the opportunity to visit it after nearly a decade. I went there in the evening for ' tiffin ' and after a short wait was ushered in. I had Idli, Wada with Sambar, Appam with Stew and Curd rice, accompanied by Rasam and followed by Filter coffee. The food was superb as usual: fresh, tasty, right degree of flavour and spice, with optimum quantity per dish. The cost for two was only Rs. 583/- or so, making it probably the highest value for money meal that I have had in recent years. The magic of the place is intact! When I came out, there was a big queue of people waiting to go in. Overall, it was a great and nostalgic experience. This is one of the many popular South Indian eateries in the Matunga/ King’s Circle area. The ambience is very basic but then this is a place to go to eat in and not for the atmosphere. You share tables, the service is quick and focuses on turning tables quickly. The advantage of this is that the food is served fresh and hot. A signage outside mentioned that guests need to share table with strangers. The gentleman serving us was elderly and he helped us make choices. He was very patient and answered all our queries with a smile. The dining room was optimally utilised to accommodate as many people at any time. Menu card was a one pager with a listing of items without description. We would strongly recommend UPMA PODI which was warm Upma placed in the center and coconut chutney in room temperature was poured on top. The dish was topped with podi (gunpowder / a powder made from lentil, chilly and spices). The filter coffee is exceptional here and is best enjoyed after a set dosa or a tuppa dosa or a pesarattu idli.
