Have been wanting visit Bhawan ever since it exploded on social media with everyone raving about the food. But a drive from Delhi to Gurgaon is always daunting. Finally made it to Bhawan yesterday for a late lunch / early dinner. Plenty of vacant tables. We chose to sit outdoors but our luck we got a shaky table due to uneven base. We order a gadbad chaat and a chicken patiala soup. The chaat was alright but no restaurant can ever match the taste of street side chaat walas. And the exorbitant prices don’t help. Patiala soup was lukewarm and the the fancy condiments are purely for show. Had a funny “chemical/medicine” kind of after taste. We ordered Kori Gassi and Appams. The waiter was kind enough to educate that it’s a “South Indian” dish. It’s one of the most disappointing Kori Gassi that I have eaten across North India, forget South India. No taste, absolutely bland, except overdose of salt. Our waiter was a cool dude, he served us with one hand in the pocket, great skills! Just before settling the bill, dozens of mosquito repelling incense sticks were placed all around, triggering my allergy and a sneezing bout. We also witnessed live protest right outside by some affected invested, with loud slogan baazi. My strings of disappointment with fancy, social media marketed, local city critics sponsored sub standard restaurants in Gurgaon continues. Only silver lining is that my trips to Gurgaon are infrequent and almost never especially to these places.
