I had ordered one Shahi Paneer for takeaway. But when I reached home and tasted it, the dish was extremely disappointing. It was so sweet as if sugar had been added to the curry, making it taste horrible. There were only a few pieces of paneer floating in plain gravy. Honestly, this was one of the worst paneer dishes I have ever had. Price per person: ₹200–400 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

I usually visit Basant Dhaba on Delhi Road because the food has reliably been one of the highlights of my trips to the area. However, my latest experience was well below par on several fronts and left me leaving with a sense of disappointment rather than the predictably good dining experience I’ve come to expect. Starting with the environment, the dining area was uncomfortably hot and stifling from the moment we sat down. The AC didn’t seem to be functioning, and despite asking the staff, there was no clear explanation or visible effort to remedy the situation during our meal. The heat made it hard to enjoy any dish for more than a few minutes, and it also amplified the already loud atmosphere—c tables and conversations from adjacent groups felt like they were in competition with our own, making it difficult to carry on a normal conversation or focus on the flavors of our food. The overall ambience, which once helped enhance the dining experience, felt chaotic and neglected in comparison to the kitchen’s promise of consistent quality. The garlic chutney, a staple I’ve appreciated on past visits, today arrived with an unusually overpowering kick. It was so pungent that it caused a stinging sensation on the palate, which was surprising and frankly uncomfortable. When I inquired with the staff about the chutney’s potency and whether this level of spice and aroma was intentional or a one-off, they were unable to provide a clear explanation or assurance about consistency and safety. This lack of information added to my concern about quality control and whether other elements of the condiments might be prepared under similarly lax standards. Service lapses also stood out. There were noticeable delays in clearing tables, and there was a general impression that the front-of-house was not being monitored with the same attentiveness I’ve seen before. It’s not just about speed—it’s about predictability and care. On a busy day, a well-managed dining room should feel coordinated, with staff able to anticipate needs rather than scramble to respond. If management could address a few critical areas, Basant Dhaba could reclaim its former reliability: - Restore and maintain proper cooling in the dining area, with a visible plan for temperature control during peak hours. - Implement noise management or seating adjustments to reduce the solid din that makes conversations and tasting notes difficult. - Reassess condiments for consistency and safety, including a clear policy on labeling and quality checks for chutneys and other accompaniments. - Strengthen service standards: timely clearing, better station management, and more proactive communication with guests about any delays or issues. - Ensure cleanliness and upkeep in dining spaces—even minor touches like refreshed table settings and routine checks can make a big difference in perceived quality. The food itself remains a reason I keep returning; when the environment is right and the kitchen quality is consistent, Basant Dhaba can once again deliver a well-rounded experience. I hope the management takes these observations seriously and makes the necessary adjustments so that Basant Dhaba can continue to be a reliable option for both locals and visitors.
