We visited Trattoria in Police Bazar, Shillong, and had a genuinely local Khasi food experience. My sister and I ordered the Khasi chicken thali, while my parents chose the veg thali, since we avoid pork and beef. The flavour of the herbs in the dishes was refreshing and completely new to us — earthy, aromatic, and distinctly Khasi. We especially enjoyed the dried fish chutney and the lentil paste prepared with black sesame. These side dishes added a depth of flavour you don’t find in regular restaurants. Local people mostly come here for their popular pork-and-rice meals, Jadoh which says a lot about its authenticity. The ambience is simple, service is fast, and the food feels like homestyle Khasi cooking. Location: Police Bazar, Shillong (easy to find, close to the main market area).
