Toll Thattukada, Edappally Introduction: Toll Thattukada, located just opposite metro pillar no. 378 near the toll junction, is a popular destination for late-night food lovers in Kochi. It's a large establishment with a seating capacity of over 100 people, yet the space often feels insufficient due to the heavy crowds, especially during evenings. Be prepared to wait at least 10-15 minutes for a seat during peak hours. Food and Taste: I tried the chicken fry with hot appam and beef curry. While the taste was ordinary, the affordability of the dishes added to the experience. The kothu porotta varieties (chicken and beef) stood out, offering medium spiciness and a slightly high masala flavor, which I enjoyed. Beef kothu porotta was particularly tender and flavorful. Other dishes like mixed noodles were decent but nothing exceptional. However, not all dishes met expectations—chicken chukka, a semi-gravy dish, was more like a regular curry, which was disappointing. On a downside, the food quality has visibly declined compared to earlier days. One concerning incident involved finding a rusty blade piece in the chicken curry, which raises serious hygiene concerns despite their claim of maintaining cleanliness with gloves. Service and Ambiance: The service was relatively quick despite the crowd, but there were occasional delays in taking orders due to the limited number of staff. The ambiance is typical of a bustling thattukada, with the kitchen noise sometimes becoming intrusive. The space itself is well-ventilated and clean compared to many other roadside eateries. Hygiene and Amenities: While the restaurant strives to maintain hygiene, incidents like the blade in food suggest lapses in their standards. The washroom amenities, though present, need better upkeep. Parking can be challenging for four-wheelers and heavy vehicles since there is no dedicated parking space. Two-wheelers, however, can manage along the roadside. Final Thoughts: Toll Thattukada is a budget-friendly spot offering a variety of non-veg options with reasonable quality and quantity for the price. While some dishes are enjoyable, others are mediocre, and occasional hygiene issues may deter regular visits. It's a lively place best suited for evening visits if you don't mind the crowd. For Kochi foodies, it’s worth trying at least once, but there's room for significant improvement in quality and hygiene practices.
