Third Wave Coffee seems to be sweeping across Chennai with ambition in its eyes, hoping to rewrite the city’s coffee story. At this particular branch, however, the promised wave barely reached ankle depth. The location is undeniably good, though parking is scarce and nearby construction ensures that inconvenience arrives before coffee does. One senses a brand rushing to expand before learning how to stand steady. A Wednesday BOGO offer, discovered through a humble newspaper pamphlet, was what finally nudged us inside. Ironically, it was also a reminder that without discounts, this place might slip quietly out of memory. The café shuts at 11 PM, an odd choice in a neighbourhood that wakes up at night. We arrived at 10.45 PM and were told seating was already closed and only takeaway was possible. Closing the experience before closing the clock is a curious way to build trust, but having travelled all the way, we surrendered. The ambience tried hard to redeem the evening. From outside, the building carries a mild grandeur, though overshadowed by louder neighbours above. Inside, the decor is genuinely beautiful. Christmas had taken over, with rattan lamps, fairy lights and spotlights creating warmth. The murals on the walls were the true stars, colourful and soulful, deserving of more admiration. Unfortunately, many lights were already switched off, giving the place the unsettling charm of a café preparing for a zombie apocalypse rather than welcoming customers. The chairs were well placed and the crowd suggested potential, had the space been allowed to breathe properly. We ordered just one drink, the sea salt mocha, intrigued and cautiously hopeful. Asking whether it was sweet earned us a vague reassurance involving chocolate. The takeaway cups were festive and charming, raising expectations one last time. Then came the sip. The salted foam on top tasted oddly aggressive, while the mocha beneath was flat and uninspired. Together, they formed a combination that made one question who approved this union. It was not bold or experimental but simply unpleasant. After a few hopeful sips, it was abandoned. Even with the offer, the price felt unjustified for a drink that failed on such a basic level. The experience ended as it began, full of promise and empty of satisfaction. Third Wave Coffee has the space, the visuals and the branding, but at this branch, it lacks soul, consistency and respect for the customer’s time and palate. Until that changes, this wave may find itself evaporating before it ever reaches shore. 3/10.
