PURE DISAPPOINTMENT If arrogance could be plated and served, The Banyan Tree Café in Ballard Estate would call it dessert. Let’s begin with the basics. The coffee was, at best, pedestrian—lukewarm, weak-bodied, and forgettable. But the real descent into culinary chaos began with the tiramisu. What landed on our table was not a delicate, layered confection of mascarpone and espresso-soaked biscuit, but a dense, baked impostor—closer to a cold cheesecake than the Italian classic it pretends to be. A travesty masquerading as tiramisu. And just when we thought it couldn’t get worse, out came the so-called chocolate mud pie. It wasn’t pie. It wasn’t mud. It was a molten mess of indistinguishable brown goo, with bizarre gelatinous chunks in syrupy confusion. When we raised this with the manager, rather than engage with humility or concern, he launched into an unsolicited TED Talk on the café’s “level” and its accolades, insinuating that the problem lay not with their kitchen, but with our palates. He scoffed at the complaint, name-dropped awards, and walked off in a flourish, declaring: “My awards are my pride.” Well, they might be. But they certainly aren’t our problem. Food should speak for itself. Here, it doesn't. And neither, clearly, does the service. They waived off the dessert bill however.
