The British used to transport spices fromWayanad to Beypore Port, Kozhikode via theKuttiadi route. Between 1700 and 1750, theysearched for a new route which could reduce thedistance. For which, they sought the help ofKarinthandan Moopan (chief), a tribal leader fromthe Paniya tribe in Wayanad. The route via theThamarassery ghat was found with the help ofKarinthandan. It is believed that he was later shotto death. I] It is also believed that Karinthandan'sghost haunted the travellers for a while until it wasnailed to a tree by a wizard. The mysterious chaintree is situated about 58 km from this ghat. It is located around 800 meters above sea levelalong National Highway NH 766 in KozhikodeDistrict. This area is a popular tourist destinationthat offers a unique blend of landscape, wildlifesanctuaries, waterfalls, dams, coffee plantations, beautiful hilltop view and varied flora and fauna. This mountain range connects the Kozhikode andWayanad Districts. It lies within the Western Ghatsthat run parallel to the western coast of the Indianpeninsula, located entirely in India. The highwayhas nine hairpin bends. Churam is about 14kilometers in length, starting from Adivaram toLakkidi View Point. [2]
