My visit to Taj Darbar Hyderabadi Restaurant was a mix of pleasant and not-so-pleasant experiences. On entering, I felt a bit reluctant as the ground floor was completely empty, giving off an eerie vibe. A waiter seated there then guided me to the first floor via strong iron stairs bulging out of the building. Thankfully, the atmosphere upstairs was much more inviting, with several visitors dining. The first floor features small curtained Arabian-style cabins, perfect for both small and large groups. Sitting on carpets with dwarf tables while enjoying mandi gives the place an authentic and private Middle Eastern feel. We ordered the Mutton Mandi, which was impressive—juicy, fleshy mutton pieces cooked well, served with two to three different chutneys/gravy options. The Alfaham chicken was equally good and authentic, while the cucumber salad, unfortunately, was bitter. On the positive side, the portion sizes were ample and the pricing reasonable for both the taste and quantity. However, there are serious drawbacks. The handwash/washroom area was poorly maintained, stinky, with visible gutkha stains and no proper cleanliness—an immediate turn-off. After the meal, the presentation of mouth fresheners was unappealing, with sugar kept loosely along with saunf at the exit. Moreover, the restaurant overall does not seem to be cleaned or groomed well, which takes away from the otherwise good dining experience. That being said, I am rating this place 4 stars, because in terms of authentic Mughal cuisine taste, it truly delivers. In fact, when compared to more famous names like Niyaz, Taj Darbar stands better in flavor and authenticity. I believe it deserves support so that with time it can improve on hygiene and service aspects, and emerge as one of the best dining destinations in Belgaum. Food: 5 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 2
