Guests reserve a table for tasty dishes here and enjoy the sights of ISKCON Kolkata, Sri Sri Radha Govind Temple. The Mughlai menu attracts customers searching for a new experience. A number of visitors of #TagEat state that mouthwatering kebabs, chicken tikka and sandwiches are offered here. It might be cool to try delicious cold coffee.
The patient staff reflects the style and character of this place. Enjoyable service is something clients like here. You may be surprised by good prices at this spot. But #TagEat didn't gain a high score on the Zomato rating list.
Location: 5/5 though it's unavailable half of the times.
Food: 2/5 Expensive for a roadside food joint. Service: 2/5 Extremely slow service and dishes not available half of the time. They take 20 mins to serve a Maggi!
The last time I visited they handed over the menu and said we also deliver. A week later we called them to deliver to our office which is approx 150a mts. away from the food joint, they denied saying it's too "far".
Overall a huge disappointment.
For foodies like me, who keeps interest in TV Shows pertaining to food and drinks, the concept of food trucks is not an alienating thought to them. The very sight of the gorgeous trucks cooking up delicious meals, sometimes even to the likes of Mocktails, Shakes, Ice creams is a sight to behold. With no many people adapting to the concept of fine dining, mostly due to the rising cost, this very concept has long been predominant and has been doing well ever since. The basic concept involves a food truck, with all kinds of loaded apparatus, making it look like a mini kitchen. You have the grills, barbeque, microwaves, OTG, Tandoors, Woodfire oven, cooking apparatus, mostly one could have everything they want to. The outside, that is the exterior is usually beautifully done as well, mostly representing a concept, say independent mascots representing the passion to go solo, or may be some antics depicting the culture of Middle-East, again signifying the type of cuisine, the truck is supposed to dish out.
With popular TV Shows like ‘Eat Street’, where one could get to see the amazing wood fire pizzas, or may be like barbecue at the back of the truck, or even ice creams being churned out using liquid Nitrogen gas, our very appetite has started to vastly adapt to these promising dishes from abroad. This is why, one can mostly see the rising of multiple café’s serving out mouthwatering dishes which was not readily available to us till date. I had long been awaiting an invitation to one such place, and was subsequently elated, with an invitation coming from the latest food truck in town, ‘#tag eat’. The motto here is simple. Just drop by and eat. The name of this food truck holds no frill, with no tongue twisting metaphors or clichés.
The location of this truck is simple as well. If you know Camac Street and Vardhan Market, you would know Fort Knox as well. This lovely and cute looking black and yellow chequered truck stands right on the main road, easily visible to all. While I wasn’t sure what to expect here, I must say, this place blew me by surprise. The first thing which I could see was the response they had got from the locals. Almost throughout the entire time we were here, people would come bombarding in to place their orders. This included the simple likes of Maggi to the extreme wishlist of Biryani. With such a small place to their disposals, the owners have done a fantastic job to maintain a prompt service, by not compromising with the quality of the products they are serving.
Following would be the dishes/items we were offered on the particular day of the event:
1) Chicken Sarson Kabab – Not sure, if Mustard goes well with Kebabs, but this was one hell of a preparation. Soft and succulent portions of chicken marinated to perfection, with a slight brush of Sarson/Mustard, and tandoor’ed or grilled to perfection. The chicken was highly subtle, and the taste of mustard, did not overpower the other flavors. Mostly, the chicken tasted as it should have, not giving any excess hint of Mustard, as per the name. A perfect balance of flavors, with the quality and quantity of the chicken portions, the price tag has been kept quite low.
2) Chicken Tikka Kabab – A variant of Kebab known to all, this one too had soft and succulent portions of chicken with Tikka Masala rubbed all over it. The Masala again wasn’t too spicy or rich, and blended well to flavor the chicken portions throughout. For such a small place, it was quite surprising to me how they are managing to serve these delicious kebabs, coming almost fresh from the grill! Would have gone well with some baked parathas to make it a roll.
3) Chicken Reshmi Kabab – I didn’t like this one as much as I did the other two. But, that doesn’t mean this one wasn’t up to the mark. The layer was creamy, but somewhere I felt, the marination was too much on the brighter side instead of an expectant layer of white cream throughout the body. Probably a bit more cream to go in for marination could do wonders to this preparation.
4) Chicken Biryani – If you have got tired with the falling quality of some of the popular Mughlai Restaurants in this city, come to this place without a second thought. The Biryani looked extremely innocent with a nice large portion of chicken leg and a delicate looking potato on the sides. However, with the first spoon, we were all surprised to the core. The Biryani was flavorful, something popular names like Arsalan used to serve in its initial days. The spices were put just right, the rice was boiled fine, the chicken portion was again flavored well. What I liked most was the inclusion of potato. It is kind of a sin to serve Biryani or any Chicken or Mutton main course without potato. The potato was again a large portion of awesomeness, probably cooked by God himself. And all of these within 100 Rs. The quantity was more than sufficient to fill up a hungry tummy, and I see no reason to head off to some old falling joints and not come here to be a part of a much needed change.
5) Masala Cheese Vada Pav – Perhaps the national dish (if I may say so) of Maharashtra. A desi equivalent to the Burgers of KFC, this one is supposed to have a boiled potatoes infused with spices, and then grounded together to form a patty which is then grilled to perfection. The patty is then put between two soft buns and is served by topping the patty with cheese and mayo. Usually includes a pickle or chilly for the wannabees. Have tasted this popular dish earlier as well at some of the popular Vada Pav franchisees across the city, but none was as flavorful and fresh as this was. The spices were just perfection, and the warm cheese along with the mayo created a wonderful blend of flavors. This is probably one of those items, for which I can come back here countless number of times.
6) Cheesy Chicken Momo's - A popular dish from Tibet, Momo has now become a part and parcel of our life. Talking about fast food, Momo’s fare in the same category to that of Kabiraji, Rolls or Fries. The Momos here were decent, but could have been much better. Somewhere I felt that the Chicken mixture lacked spices, the coating was way overdone, was kind of sticky as well. Perhaps, it needed a better way of steaming the Momo’s to look them fresh. The quality of cheese could be improved as well.
7) Veg Cheese Momo's – Mostly the same verdict as that of the Chicken Momo’s. The mixture needs a better blend of spices, and the Momo’s were too sticky to my liking. The dipping sauce was flavorful though. The cheese again needs an improvement.
8) Maggi Sandwich – Being a kid, the very sight of your mother stuffing in a handful or freshly prepared maggi within two toasted breads, is something we all have grew up with. This dish was thus a throwback to the past, a sheer nostalgia and a memory to cherish. The Maggi was well done, trickled well with the Masala, but I felt that the quantity was too less, and the amount of bread was a bit too much. What people would probably want here is more of maggi and less of buns. The quantity atleast needs to be tripled. This one probably had 4 portions of bread toast. I would suggest lowering the number to 2, and tripling the quantity of Maggi provided. Not that what was served was bad or wasn’t worth the money, but personally I would like buckets of maggi and fingersized buns, for Maggi is something dearer and nearer to most of us.
9) Cold Coffee – With the popular coffee chains serving a poor quality of cold coffee, I again wasn’t sure this one would be any different. But then again, I was proved wrong. The blend was right, it wasn’t watery or runny. The chocolate topping gave it a nice chocolaty texture and was much relief to all us who were standing for so long under the scorching heat of the sun.
I must say, that this truck has made a promising start. With flavorful Biryanis, mouthwatering Vada Pao’s, delicate Kebabs, tempting Maggi and soothing Cold Coffee, this place basically serves all you could expect as a fast food joint. But this place is one notch higher than any average outlet. Mostly because of the quality they serve out and the minimal price they are charging for it. The owners have been working very hard to make this a success and can be mostly found at the spot supervising all the needs and wants of their customers. The service was pretty fast and the workers are in sync with the name and feel imparted by the food truck by wearing a themed shirt depicting the name #tag eat at the back of their T-shirt. The place is kept clean and won’t give you hygiene-bumps. So unless you have undying love for fine-dining, drop in here soon to give these guys a try. :-)
