The key aspect of this restaurant is the Indian cuisine. Good fried chicken will impress you at the first bite. It's a pleasant experience to order perfectly cooked payasam.

The success of Salem Mangalam would be impossible without the courteous waitstaff. Cool service is something that people highlight in their comments.

Salem, being my native, I tried out this place in the first few days of its opening. And my oh my, it was perfect. It was the closest comparison anyone could have to authentic Salem food in Chennai. Within no time, it became a regular, especially when we wanted to introduce our friends to the native tastebuds. The essence gravy was beyond perfect and despite its mediocre ambience and high costs which wasn't very VFM owing to its restaurant setting, it became a favourite of me and my family.

However, this is not to praise. In fact, its just the opposite. I've generally thought that most hotels reach a great point and then fall to gain a bad reputation. Well, I was proved wrong here. Salem Mangalam opened its doors a few months ago and its still empty most of the times, but yet, the waiters and management have got a super high attitude. Last night, me and my sister took a cousin of ours just to show her the 'Salem' taste. And imagine our surprise when we order for an Essence Dosa ( a dosa with chicken gravy lathered on in between ) but actually got the same dosa with plain old Masala Sambhar. For those who don't know what the Essence gravy is, it a chicken and mutton stew based gravy with an extra level of spice and a few chicken pieces to add to the flavour. It is in fact, one of the most original and authentic tastes of Salem. The minute we saw it, we found it wasn't essence gravy and when we asked the waiter, he initially tried fighting us that it was essence. After some persistence, he went to speak to the manager. And oh my god, it was so sickening to hear them comment and laugh about you so loudly. If they were gonna do that, they should've atleast got a manager room somewhere else, not adjoining the seating area. Totally disgusting. Anyway, listen to what happened next. The waiter and the manager actually had the audacity to concoct a story that the Masala Sambhar was an 'Independence Day Special'. Now please, correct me if I'm wrong, but which hotel gives a vegetarian substitute to a non-vegetarian gravy; and how many restaurants serve such specials without consulting with the customer. And honestly, had they apologized, I would've just let the issue pass; but lying that too with such an attitude and rudeness, it reached a whole new level of cheapness and disgust. What continued was equally worse! I told them that if it was a special, then good, but might I have the essence gravy? (which on previous visits they serve as an accompaniment; and is done at Salem). I kinda knew that they wouldn't have it and U was right. Seriously, if you people don't have a dish, then tell it to the customer and for Gods sake, don't lie especially with such an attitude. We made the waiter bill us for the remaining food and we left, but not before the waiter nearly threw the bill at our face. I would've given a minus rating if I had the option. Would never set foot in this godforsaken place again.

A must try hotel for South Indian Non Veg. lovers. Me being from Salem, this hotel has been my favourite since my childhood. I have been missing the taste of Essence dosa ever since I moved to Chennai. Happy to see their outlet here in Velachery. Have tried almost all the menu here. Though the dishes look a bit different from that of their shop in Salem, the taste is the same. Apart from the food, the staffs too are very friendly.

Been here twice with friends, tried most of the dishes. Their taste is so authentic and native. One should try idly fry and kaima dosa's. Localities in and around the area shud definitely try this restaurant. Finally to mention is their elaneer payasam is just wow!. Try it for sure.
