I called the Safdurjung Club swimming pool before going and was told very clearly on the call that I could come anytime after 7 PM, pay, and swim. So my friend and I showed up and there was no one at the reception. We stood around like lost furniture for over 30 minutes, kept calling the number, no one responded. Eventually, someone showed up and took us into a shabby office, where we were suddenly told, “You need a reference to swim here. We don’t allow just anyone.” Umm okay if that’s the actual policy, why say on the phone that we could come and swim? After seeing us in person, their tone completely changed. Now it was: “Actually, no, you can’t swim.” Because now they could racially profile us and decide we weren’t “okay” to swim? I’m not from Delhi and I definitely don’t look like it. I’m tattooed and I don’t exactly blend in and apparently, that was enough for them to decide I didn’t belong. It felt like we were being filtered out based on appearance alone. This wasn’t just rude or unprofessional. It was classist, racist, discriminatory and humiliating. The whole experience made it feel like we were begging to be let in, when we were literally just trying to pay and access a public facility. So if you’re from a different region, have a face that doesn’t fit their narrow idea of who “belongs,” or if you simply don’t look boring and upper crust, good luck!! And if you want to know what it feels like to be quietly excluded in your own country, this is the spot. Otherwise? Spare yourself the insult.
