I recently braved the intense heat of Delhi to visit Rumi's Arabian Kitchen, eager to try their Chicken Mandi. The ambience at Rumi's is simple and decent, lacking the vibrant atmosphere one might expect from a themed restaurant. The interior features one corner as a traditional Arabic seating arrangement where you remove your shoes and sit at a lower level, adding an authentic touch but not enough to elevate the overall environment. Upon receiving the menu, I was disappointed to find that the Mandi (Shawaya) was not available. This was a letdown as it was my first choice. We ended up ordering the only available mandi on the menu, the Mandi (Al Faham). The food itself was a mixed bag. The rice, a crucial part of any Mandi dish, was quite bland. Although the portion size was generous, sufficient for four people at Rs. 800, the rice quality was inconsistent. Some portions of the thali had clumped rice, making the texture unappealing. This was particularly disappointing as my previous experience with Mandi in Hyderabad had set high expectations. However, the chicken was a highlight. It was cooked to perfection, juicy, and flavorful, reminiscent of a good tandoori chicken. This was the saving grace of the meal, offering a satisfying taste that somewhat compensated for the rice's shortcomings. One of the most concerning aspects was the hygiene. The sink and tables were not properly cleaned, which is a basic expectation for any dining establishment. When we asked the waiter to clean our table, he hastily wiped it with a tissue, leaving behind residues. This lack of proper cleaning was disappointing and suggests a need for the restaurant to improve its hygiene practices significantly.
