Authentic Taste of Old Kolkata – Must Visit! We recently visited Padma Restaurant on Amherst Street (Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani), and it was a memorable culinary experience that truly captures the essence of North Kolkata’s old-world charm. If you love authentic Bengali and Mughlai dishes in a no-frills, traditional setting, this is the place to be. We ordered their Mutton Kosha and Mughlai Paratha, both of which were absolutely delicious. The mutton kosha was rich, flavorful, and perfectly spiced — tender chunks of mutton slow-cooked in a dark, aromatic gravy that paired beautifully with their soft, flaky parathas. The mughlai paratha, though simple in presentation, had a crispy exterior and a well-seasoned filling that wasn’t overly greasy — a welcome surprise. The highlight, apart from the taste, is definitely the pricing. The entire meal was incredibly pocket-friendly, especially given the portion size and quality. It's rare to find such hearty and satisfying meals at these rates in the city anymore. The restaurant itself is a small, nostalgic “cabin-style” eatery — nothing fancy, but it has character. Seating is limited, but service is prompt and polite. It’s evident this place has been loved by generations and continues to hold its ground despite changing times. We also got a chance to look at the menu card (attached here), which includes a wide variety of classic Bengali snacks and main course dishes — from fish fry and egg devils to mixed fried rice and vegetable chops. We’re already planning our next visit to try more items. However, one major disappointment was that the restaurant is cash only. In today’s time, the lack of any digital payment option feels outdated and inconvenient. It’s definitely something to keep in mind before visiting. Overall, Padma Restaurant is a hidden gem for food lovers — affordable, flavorful, and full of old Kolkata soul. Overall, the food prices here are moderate—not too expensive—but the quantity and quality aren’t that impressive. We ordered chicken pakora, fish fingers, and two cups of milk tea. To be honest, the tea tasted pretty bad. The fish fingers were priced at ₹180 for just 5 pieces, and they were quite underwhelming. The chicken pakora, though, was actually quite good. As for the ambience, it didn’t really feel couple-friendly. I visited with my sister, so it worked fine for a casual chai break, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a date or any special outing. Also, keep in mind—they only accept cash, which is a bit inconvenient in today's time. Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4 Meal type: Brunch Price per person: ₹1–200
