The Tandoori Rotis so good that they taste of earth and fire!
The iconic eatery from Daryaganj, Puraani Dilli opened in 1920 in Peshawar(now Pakistan), and moved to Daryaganj in Delhi post partition in 1947.
They pioneered the original Tandoor Bhatti in India by literally digging a clay pit in the kitchen, and introduced Butter Chicken, Tandoori Chicken, and Dal Makhani to the world.
Reasons enough for us to visit.
We kept it simple and ordered tandoor Rotis , Paneer Makhani and Dal Makhani - all Moti Mahal originals.
The Dal Makhani is rich, creamy and smokey - and while it is no slouch, it isn’t the best around either. The portion is good for two. Really good overall.
The Paneer Makhani has 4 large slabs of Malai Paneer in a saffron butter gravy, rich in Kasoori methi flavours, and slight tanginess. The creaminess of it sort of dominates the flavour profile overall. I’d have enjoyed a stronger tomato flavour.
The Tandoori rotis got us floored!
The aroma of the clay pit is so pronounced - you can distinctly smell that it hasn’t come out of an artificial tandoor, but out of Mother Earth. Surreal!
The place has a classic 70s ambience with light jazz music, comfortable wooden chairs, white china with bright logos impressed on them. The service was quick and efficient.
And they’ll be 100 years old next year!
