As someone who’s grown up in Kashmir and eats authentic wazwan at least once a week, I honestly don’t understand how this place is getting such good reviews. It’s a complete letdown in the name of wazwan. We tried the Rogan Josh, I don’t even know what it was supposed to taste like because it definitely wasn’t Rogan Josh. The Yakhni was bland and disappointing, and the so-called Kashmiri Waza-style Kokur tasted more like a basic kadhai chicken you’d get at any regular restaurant. The only dish that was somewhat okay was the Chok Charwan. Even the Gande Choth (onion vinegar chutney) — which is the easiest thing to get right — tasted terrible. Honestly, the only thing authentic on our table was the Coke. I get that they’ve tried to create a Kashmiri vibe with the ambiance and folk music, and that part is nice. But a good atmosphere isn’t enough if the food is this bad. If you’re looking for real wazwan, please don’t waste your time or money here. If it’s just the decor and Kashmiri songs you’re after, then sure — visit once. But food-wise, this was a huge disappointment. Hope they seriously work on their recipes because right now, it’s nowhere close to what Kashmiri food should be. Hello Basit, Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time out to write to us. Please note, wazwaan is very different from Kashmiri Pandit cuisine that you have ordered namely the Roganjosh, Yakhni and Chok . These dishes are made with 100% authenticity without onion, garlic and tomatoes. I hope you understand the difference between the two cuisines coming from the same region and appreciate the nuances. Again, thank you for writing to us.

Tried their wazwan chicken seekh and chicken roganjosh and nothing tasted good. I am not sure whether kashmiri food should taste like what they served today. Chicken roganjosh pieces didnt taste fresh at all and they were too chewy. I dont recommend this place. Food: 1 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 3

As a Kashmiri Pandit, I was looking forward to an authentic taste of home at Matamaal. The food was overall good, but I found the flavors to be a bit underwhelming. Most of the dishes had noticeably less salt, which dulled the taste. What was particularly disappointing was the Wazwan — the kabab portion was only half, whereas traditionally it is served full. That felt like a compromise on authenticity. The ambiance and service were nice, but when it comes to the food, I expected a more genuine and flavorful Kashmiri experience. For someone familiar with true Kashmiri cuisine, it felt a bit toned down.
