One of those times where choosing a vegetarian restaurant I hadn’t been to with my brother was a task! The options do seem to be more in recent items than ever. We found ourselves at T.Nagar and MDR finally; sandwiched between Virudhunagar and Murugan Idli restaurants. Although multiple signages call out MDR, it could be missed. It’s located in the basement and we got the only table that was available at 21:35.
Order:-
Chandni Paneer Tikka (₹270) - A train of Paneer Tikka slices covered with melted cheese. The slices were glued together with a cashew based, mildly spicy paste. What looked like just another Tikka with just some added cheese took me by surprise. Deliciously good. Must try.
Mushroom Masaledaar (₹200) - Batter fried mushrooms with an uncomfortably overpowered tangy taste from the chaat masala, amongst other ingredients. The person incharge mentioned that since it’s Punjabi the usual addition would be a bit much (of chaat masala). Although I agreed with him then, none of us liked the dish.
Mirch Masala Kofta (₹230) - One of my favourite sides for Naan that left me disappointed a little. Gravy was tomato purée based and mildly spicy. Kofta was tough on the outside.
Veg Banjara (₹240) - Tasted like a mellowed down version of Kadai vegetable. Probably that’s how it’s meant to be but found it low on flavour, almost bland.
Maharani Biriyani (₹270) - Biriyani was dry, sweet with amounts amounts of raisins and corn along with peas. Portion was large. Satisfied.
Tried the Special Amritsari & regular Butter Naans (₹100 & ₹70). The SA version was stuffed with turmeric, green chilli, Paneer, cashew and coriander. Would be able to identify the flavours if eaten with dal or something mild, in my opinion.
Sweet Lassi (₹100) was Aptly sweet with a thick consistency but carried a slight sour after-taste. Mango Lassi (₹140) was good. Lassi bottles were a little dirty on the outside.
Service was quick. The manager was sure to check on us from time to time. Seating was adequate. If I come back, I’d stick to anything Paneer at MDR, Biriyani and Naans.
