This Mari hotel, supposed to have introduced vadacurry as a side dish for Idly and Dosai, is a simple south indian tiffin center. Closed on Mondays and with a lean guest attendance at 12.30 pm on a Tuesday, I tried their popular set dosai - vadacurry combination costing ₹60/-. Both were good with the soft set dosai and mildly spiced vadacurry. Vadacurry which normally is loaded with strong doses of spices in other places generally keep people away from this delicious dish. It was a very apt accompaniment for the set dosai. regular sambar, coconut chutney and kaara chutney are available. Kaara chutney was tastier witha hint of ginger. I’ve been visiting this place since my childhood. Every weekend we used to buy sambar and vadacurry to home. This time we tried dosa vadacurry and onion rava dosa. Taste has changed a bit. Saidapet Mari Hotel: Mondays Holiday!! This is a very old restaurant serving pure veg options for the locality of Saidapet. A normal south indian tiffen hotel, can't expect much in terms of the variety of the menu. Famous for a dish called "Vada curry" (legends say this was invented/ originated here first - which is now a very famous and widely available side dish in Chennai) is an accompaniment for dosa idly or chapathi. Average in terms of hygiene. Major let down is there is no UPI or card supported payment. Only cash!!?!!?! in 2025? What happened to digital India?! It seems sketchy, looks like the one running this wants to avoid being taxed for the sales and easy to do so when you don't have any digital trails of payments/sales. Also, offers in person take outs and dine in, not available on any online food ordering platforms. In terms of crowd it's always quite busy, so plan accordingly.
