Mewad Prem Chaat is a place I have been visiting since their inception in 1984-85. They had a simple cart adjacent to erstwhile stone wall compound of Vidyapeeth Highschool. Those days it used to be for 1 Re. Mostly a blue paper note or coin or many times we used to pay in 25 paise and 50 paise coins. Which have now lost value and discontinued. Since I left Kolhapur in 1997, I usually visit my native town atleast once a year and amongst others like Misal Pav and Mutton Thali Mewad was a check box to be ticked. Which was always on my To Do list. Since advent of new century the rush to Ambabai Temple increase manifold to enormous proportion which crowded the whole Temple site and surroundings. With the passage of time visists got curtailed from a week to few days to one ot two. Slowly the things to visit became a must to do to nice to do and several years I actually missed it. Today I got an opportunity, thanks to my cousin brother. So as soon as we reached, I approached the left hand side cart and asked him to make a double Kachori Chaat. The youngsters who was preparing was taken aback. He sheepishly replied, he simply could not. The whole stuff is too much to be in one plate and only his orginal owner could do it well. The original owner was from Mewad with a imposing personality in flowing beard and moustache who used to ride on bullet. Till few years back he was himself running the show. And he was master in his art of making chaat. Double Chaat for a discerning foodie was rarity but he did it with aplomb. Haven't seen him there since ages. Hope he is well. So back to Chaat. I opted for single and he indeed prepared it well. Crisp Kachori, the potato gravy , curd and Tamarind chutney . Simple basic ingredients. But the way they prepare them individually and crush the Kachori by hand and add the rest of the stuff is something out of this world. You can't pinpoint what exactly they do right. But you don't get such Chaat anywhere atleast in the state of Maharashtra. The thickish crispy Kachori pieces, soaked in potato gravy/ curry which has reddish oily layer belies it's color in not being hot and spicy. It's perfectly alright for anyone . Kids to elders. One and all. The Curd and Tamarind sweet sour chutney turn few ordinary looking ingredients into something ethereal. Bite after bite it reinforced my belief street food is all about simple ingredients, minimal preperation and skilful mixing. Simple but difficult to master. It's an art. Not everyone has it. Mewad Prem Chaat is serving foodies like me for over four decades. Part of any product or service Quality is meeting or exceeding customer expectations, bit equally important part is also to have consistency. Since 1985 and today in 2025 fourty years have passed and the same taste lingered on my taste buds for decades. Today was one more reaffirmation. I miss several things from Kolhapur. But never thought something which didn't originate in Kolhapur I would miss. But this is one unforgettable experience it have it. Incidently when I moved to PCMC Pune way back in 1997, I found similar Chaat Bhandar near Moraya Goswami Mandir and lo behold the coincidence, these two guys are brothers. They make almost the same chaat but something is different. For me Kolhapurkar guy is superior in taste and consistency. Ah..Life! P.S. That's my School behind where I did my SSC schooling in 1983 topper in science.
