If you’re missing the classic Paris Corner Atho and can’t travel that far, this place is a great alternative! The taste is authentic, the atho is fresh and well-balanced, and the masala is just right. Easily one of the best Burma Atho spots in this area. Highly recommended if you’re craving good street-style Burmese food! Food: 4 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3 Recommended dishes: Egg Atho, Non Veg Atho

Thanjavur, also known as the Rice bowl of Tamil Nadu is known for its fertility, agricultural activities and most importantly for its rice production. The British were looking for alternate spaces to cultivate rice in Burma (present-day Myanmar). Hence people started migrating from Thanjavur to Burma. Though Cholas had expanded their empire till Burma, the large migration occurred only during the British colonial era in the 19th century. During the second world war, people fled back to India, many travelled on foot, fearing Japanese invasion. Parasakthi, the 1952 cult classic Tamil film, written by Karunanidhi is also notable for the scenes involving the Burmese-Tamils fleeing Burma. The second influx of migration occurred during the 1962 military coup in Burma which forced many Burmese-Tamils to leave the country. It is estimated that 1,55,000 left Burma between 1963 and 1970. After leaving Burma, the Burmese-Tamils settled in ghettos like Vyasarpadi in northern Madras. Housing schemes for the Burma repatriates were also provided by the respective Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu. This led to the birth of Burmese street food in Madras. Many of the dishes have been modified by the settlers for the Indian palette . While you may find very less fine dining restaurants serving Burmese cuisine in Chennai, the street food is a vibrant scene with people savouring the Burmese fusion dishes like Atho, Mohinga and Bhejo, to the hilt. I am not a big fan of Burmese food but this one located at OMR, Padur was really good which I would consider for a recurring visit. While one may feel the place to be a tad pricey outlet considering this to be a not-so-fancy street food stall, the flavours would not disappoint you for sure.
