Kalamba Misal – Udyamnagar Branch, Kolhapur A visit to Kolhapur is never truly complete without a visit to a Misal joint. Either you go to one of the traditional names or explore someone new who has earned a loyal following. One free afternoon, I decided to try something different and called an old schoolmate. Our conversation, as expected, quickly turned toward Misal. Since I wanted to explore a new spot, he recommended Kalamba Misal at Udyamnagar, the original branch being near Kalamba Jail. This outlet stands right next to the famous Phadtare Misal, which always has a crowd and a long waiting line, especially in the mornings. I avoid it for that very reason. Waiting endlessly doesn’t agree with my infinitesimal patience. I would rather choose a smaller, reputed place where you can enjoy food peacefully. I reached there past midday and, to my surprise, got a parking spot right in front of the hotel. That’s rare because the area is one of Kolhapur’s oldest industrial zones, full of narrow lanes and bylanes. The shop is small, with tables seating four and eight people. Most were occupied, and I ended up sharing a table with a couple of locals who had arrived just before me. I ordered the Special Misal, which arrived in minutes. It wasn’t served premixed but as a kind of Misal Thali — a bowl of Misal Kat (gravy) served separately, along with boiled moth beans and potato mix, Shev-Chiwada, finely chopped onions, curd, lemon, and two slices of bread. It looked unique and appealing. I scooped half the moth bean–potato mix into the Kat, added some Shev-Chiwada, and squeezed lemon on top. Personally, I like to eat Misal the moment it’s served, without overmixing. But that day I decided to follow the local way. After waiting a minute or two for the Shev to soak slightly, I began tasting. The first scoop told me I was in for something special. The Shev-Chiwada was crisp and a bit sweet, the moth beans were perfectly boiled with tiny sprouts, and the potato mix was mild, without heavy turmeric or spice. The Misal Kat balanced everything beautifully — red-hot and flavorful, full of chili, pepper, and secret Kolhapuri spices. It was spicy but not overpowering. Together, these simple ingredients created a wonderful harmony of taste and aroma. The bread was soft and white, close to milk bread but plain, doing its quiet job of softening the spice and making the experience complete. Once I started eating, my muscle memory took over. Spoonful after spoonful disappeared until the bowl was empty and both bread slices were gone. I rarely ask for more, but today I did. Half the bowl of moth bean–potato mix and Shev-Chiwada was still waiting, so I poured in more Misal Kat. This second round came with extra Tarri and more heat. It was equally enjoyable. The first half satisfied my hunger and craving for the typical Kolhapuri Zataka, while the second half felt like a leisurely walk through Misal heaven. Eat a little, enjoy the flavor, add a bit of onion or lemon, and continue slowly, appreciating every bite. Good Misal does that to you. It slows you down, makes you savor the moment. Today, Kalamba Misal did exactly that for me. At the end, it was pure happiness. Great food, polite service, and a truly authentic Kolhapuri taste. Definitely worth a visit. Don’t go there just because you couldn’t get a seat at a more famous joint. Go because this Misal represents what Kolhapur Misal really is — spicy, soulful, and satisfying. I even took three parcels home for the kids. They loved it too. Highly recommended for all Misal lovers visiting Kolhapur.
