My friend and I went to Manali for a work-from-the-mountains situation and on one, hungry-and-tired-after-work night we decided we were bored of the hotel food and wanted to go out. Since it was already 8pm then, we didn't have a ton of options open around us in the log hut area and since we were tired, we didn't have it in us to walk far in the cold. So a chance "food near me" led us to a "Highland Burger Grill" 400m from our hotel. We were excited and set out on our 2 minute journey and landed at a somewhat barren looking hotel entrance. It was the classic google-maps-led-me-here-but-I'm-so-lost case and we were looking around when we found "Highland Burger Chill" written in chalk on a black board in a very ill-lit area. We were sure it was shut or inopertional and were just looking around because we were finally in new surroundings after being in the room all day, and we were just about to leave, when someone started walking towards us. That was Akshay, the owner and the chef of the place. He welcomed us and assured that the place is operational and thankfully, turned the lights on. We had a pizza that night, made from scratch by him, which I would say was like a 7/10. But that night was the first of many at Highland Burger Grill. By our last day in Manali, my friend and I had shared 5 pizzas there, which increasingly kept changing according to what we liked and got closer to a 9/10!!! We also had waffles (which were yum if left out to sit for 30 minutes), sandwiches (which I don't have too many thoughts about), fries (which my friend wanted but I pitched in on because they looked tempting), fried chicken (which was spicy af but still great) and the famous chicken burgers!! All in about 6 days. Yes, that's a lot. So the chicken burgers were the best I'd say. I was trying to be vegetarian and Akshay's description of the burger made me want to give up on that. And the burger made the decision worth it, with it's right texture, juiciness of the chicken, the oozing flavors, especially of Akshay's special sauce. The cherry on top was that we became friends with him - we'd go there after work, order and chill with him and talk about all our lives, and hear about the mountains from him. The last day was my friend's birthday and Akshay was kind enough to offer space to us in that hotel and provide us food for free! Who does that? Anyway, this review, which feels more like a diary entry, is my way of saying that I recommend this place! Lovely food and lovelier host. They 100% made my trip better!! Go for a chill sit-down and make sure to strike up a conversation with Akshay - won't regret it!
