Grand Entrée Select, a recently inaugurated fine dining establishment in Kottayam, now occupies the premises once held by the historic Ambassador Hotel. Our luncheon plans with close relatives led us to make a reservation for five, after a couple of attempts over the phone. Though I initially requested a 1 PM slot, the restaurant kindly suggested a 12:30 PM arrival, which suited us perfectly. Upon reaching the appointed time, we were graciously given the liberty to choose our table. Rajesh Ramkrishnan attended to our needs, displaying exceptional hospitality throughout our 1 hour and 30 minutes at the restaurant. While the space is relatively modest and adorned with minimal decor, the English-like upholstery and comfortable chairs offered a pleasant ambiance. However, the tables could benefit from some attention. The restaurant walls, while dull, did not hinder our overall experience, although the wall leading to the kitchen appeared slightly smudged despite my clear lenses. Our culinary journey began with starters, namely the Kanthari Fish and Spicy Tawa Chicken, served sequentially with a slightly extended interval. Both dishes were flavourful, well-presented, and provided ample portions for our party of five. The main course featured unique and delicious offerings such as Vatta Fish (Chuttulli Meen), Chicken Pollichatu, Beef Varatti Pollichatu, Ghee Rice, Chicken Fried Rice, and Kerala Parottas. While the Chuttulli Meen exceeded the displayed quantity in the menu, its exquisite taste overshadowed any discrepancies. Desserts included Caramel Custard Pudding (a reluctant choice after my preferred Bread Butter Pudding was unavailable), Carrot Halwa with ice cream, and plain ice cream—all of exceptional quality. Despite expressing some reservations about the size of the caramel custard, the overall dining experience was outstanding. The bill, at Rs 762 per person, proved to be reasonable, considering the quality of the fare. Grand Entrée Select accepts UPI payments, and the wash area is maintained dry and clean. A spacious waiting area outside the restaurant is an added convenience. However, car parking can be challenging, especially for larger SUVs. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend this establishment to those seeking a fine and relaxed dining experience with family and friends in the Kottayam area.
