I visited Divine Cafe & Bakery, Tapovan, Laxman Jhula, Rishikesh for breakfast, and unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. I ordered Upma and a Cappuccino. The Upma tasted terrible, with a strong smell of stale oil. The staff seemed poorly trained, which I believe is more of a management issue than the employees’ fault. The only positive aspect of this restaurant is its interior, which is genuinely nice. However, the owner seems to forget that good food quality is the most important factor for any restaurant. Another shocking point: they charged 18% GST on the food bill. To clarify, 18% GST is typically applied only in premium hotel restaurants where the room tariff exceeds ₹7,500 per night, usually inside luxury 5-star hotels. I understand this cafe might be part of a hotel property that charges more than ₹7,500 per night for rooms. But the reality is that 98% of the customers here are walk-ins, not hotel guests. Charging such a high GST feels exploitative. If the restaurant operates on the roadside and caters mostly to walk-in customers, it should function as a standalone restaurant with fair taxation. My bill was ₹528 (for 1 Upma and 1 Cappuccino), and I paid an additional ₹95.16 as GST. I’m attaching the bill for reference. Mukesh, my waiter, was extremely patient and attentive even though I was quite hungry/HANGRY . The service was excellent, and the food portions were generous and satisfying.
