A Mockery of South Indian Cuisine – Darshan Narmada, Ahmedabad The biggest joke is 30 min waiting for a restaurant to which is half empty. If you’re craving authentic South Indian food in Ahmedabad, Darshan Narmada is exactly the place to avoid. This place is a joke in the name of South Indian cuisine. From the moment we sat down, the disappointment began. We were told the chef was away “in the village cooking real South Indian food.” That alone should’ve been our cue to leave – because what was served here was neither real nor edible. The so-called Chettinad Dosa looked like it had been dragged through a festival of confusion. The sambar – if you can even call it that – came in a single tiny bowl for four people and had no spice, no soul, no flavor. More like lukewarm dal water than anything remotely resembling sambar. And don’t get me started on the chutneys – mint chutney instead of the classic coconut or tomato-garlic? Blasphemy. The food was delayed, served cold, and completely out of sync with the vibrant, bold, layered flavors you’d expect from genuine South Indian fare. It felt like they Googled “South Indian food” and attempted to reconstruct it from memory – and failed miserably. One of the worst culinary experiences I’ve ever had. If you love South Indian food, do yourself a favor – skip this place. Drive the extra miles, wait an extra hour, or better yet, just cook at home. Anything would be better than this disaster.
