We chose this establishment to celebrate a birthday six of us, armed with good intentions and even better appetites. The reservation was honored and to their credit, a complimentary birthday cake appeared which was a thoughtful touch. However, the hospitality began to unravel even before we arrived. We were repeatedly urged to pre-order our food hours in advance, to the point that we were placing orders while still en route in the morning. This would have made sense at a wedding caterer, perhaps but for a weekday lunch? Especially baffling when you consider they’re open only for a narrow afternoon window, which seemed to fuel a constant undertone of urgency and impatience. Once seated, that urgency only intensified. We were reminded often and firmly that they’d be closing soon. Nothing says “celebration” quite like being gently herded through your own meal. Now, onto the food. South Indian fare with an impressively broad repertoire. The thalis were satisfying and offered a comforting tour of familiar flavors. But then came the “Vegetable Biryani”, an unforgettable experience for all the wrong reasons. It arrived in a portion better suited to a modest snack and tasted suspiciously like someone had a rendezvous with an ITC instant mix and thought we wouldn’t notice. Bold move. Audacious, even. The table arrangement leaned more towards chaos than charm even the smallest darshini in Bangalore offers better standing room and spatial sense. We found ourselves navigating chairs and elbows like a mini obstacle course. Service moved at a pace that could only be described as meditative. Our repeated inquiries for missing drinks and dishes were met with serene indifference, and water refills seemed to require diplomatic negotiations. The décor, with its old-world aspirations, could be charming if the lighting didn’t suggest a power-saving experiment. As a Bangalorean who remembers Windsor Manor in its pre-ITC days, this visit felt like a melancholy déjà vu a reminder that grandeur can indeed fade. Unless the attitude, ambience, and service receive the revival they so desperately need, nostalgia will remain the only thing worth returning for. Throughout our visit, we were gently reminded again and again that “we will be closing soon.” Perhaps, if this is the standard they wish to uphold, they might consider closing a little more permanently. Still, we wish them the very best. Well, someone has to.
