Chungam - it is a junction were two rivers crossing or three water ways are joining to enter the historical and once famous Alleppey commercial Canal. One is coming from north of the commercial city via Punnamada lake, another one from south through Alleppey-Kollam water way and the third one from east through Pampa river. This junction is the entry point to commercial canal. Earlier- before goods transportation network through road was established- loads of goods from distant places for trade was brought to this city through these canal network using huge boats driven by human effort as well as wind power. Since Chungam junction was the entry point of goods for trade, there was a sales tax office to collect commercial tax (chungam in Malayalam) of incoming goods. That is why the place got the name Chungam.
