Full review:
I live within spitting distance of this place, and I noticed it one day strolling along Baner Road. It has an exceptional location, on the corner of a busy chowk with ample parking right outside. It is fenced off from the road by what looks like a bamboo wall.
There is indoor and outdoor seating, and we sat ourselves outdoors on the ground floor. The chairs were metal and the tables almost too tall to eat off of. I had visited with my brother and a friend on a cold December night, expecting a warm drink and some good food. Instead, what we got was clumsy service and a second-rate meal. I would have written a review earlier but the restaurant was not listed on Zomato at the time of my visit.
We sat outside and it was quite a while before a waiter showed up with a menu, even though the restaurant was absolutely empty except for us. The drinks are affordable, but the food is not. The menu itself was badly printed, illegible text on paper, simply laminated in plastic. But I put this down to the fact that they had just opened. Then the waiter came up again to take our order.
Not to be offensive, but the fellow was phenomenally incompetent. He didn't know a single dish on the menu, and couldn't even pronounce anything that wasn't a liquor. Evidently he was poorly trained, and personally I don't believe he had ever worked a day in a restaurant before. But I don't blame him for his incompetence, I blame the establishment for hiring him in the first place, and failing to train him properly thereafter.
Eventually, we managed to order 4 dishes for 3 people: Khum Pha Potato, Three Layer Chicken Schezwan Rice, Thai Veg Penang Curry, & Burnt Garlic Fried Rice to go with it.. What the menu does not mention and the waiter neglected to tell us (or more likely didn't know himself) is that the Penang Curry includes boiled rice, so there was no need to order the Garlic Fried Rice. What he also did not tell us is that the portions are large. In the end, we had to pack almost half the order.
Nothing was remarkable, and nothing was bad. All dishes were extremely mediocre, but the Khum Pha Potato (sweet & chilly crisp fried potato) is the only one I will recommend to any unfortunate soul that might dine in this place.
I would not suggest Boteco to anyone looking for a good time. At this rate, it will shut down before the year is out anyway. We didn't bother to try dessert, since Dairy Don right next door is a tried and tested success.
