Last week, I went to Amma Mess in Kozhikode. First of all, the food there is not worth the money I spent. The side dishes served with the meals seem to be given only because they are required to serve something. If you ask for a refill, the staff doesn’t come promptly. After asking multiple times, they come and serve only a very small quantity. The fish gravy that comes with the meals has no real connection to fish, and if you ask for more, they reluctantly give just a tiny amount. It almost feels like they are offering food as charity. The staff has an attitude of “eat if you want and leave.”. The fish fries cost ₹200/220. We ordered seer fish, shark, and kalanchi. All the fish pieces were cut as thin as possible, and because of the overpowering masala, you can’t taste the real flavor of the fish. All the fish pieces end up tasting the same. Amma Mess House easily serves some of the best meals in town. The food tastes fresh, homemade, and full of real flavor not the kind that’s overloaded with masala just for show. You can tell they cook with care. The fish? Yeah, it’s a bit pricey, but man, the taste makes it worth every rupee. Perfectly cooked, spicy in the right way, and just melts in your mouth. Definitely not something you’ll find at most places around here. The place itself is clean, simple, and always busy which says a lot. The staff are quick and friendly, even when the crowd piles up.
