This salad is made from sweet and sour apples, walnuts and celery, and a mixture of mayonnaise, lemon juice and cayenne pepper that are served as a dressing. It first appeared in a restaurant at the New York hotel "Waldorf-Astoria", hence the name. The dish was pleasant to the visitors of the restaurant and soon spread throughout the country, and the recipe became classic. Now in Waldorf salad sometimes other walnuts are used instead of walnuts, raisins or fresh grapes are also added.
