Uttar Dakshin
Where North meets South, somewhere at the center????.
Sadar, Nagpur.

Quality , a somewhat rare find nowadays. I am not talking about fancy sleek interiors, promising menus and super marketing stunts. I am talk about food quality. The ingredients used, hygiene level maintained and thought and process given to the menu. To bring a dish to the dining table with perfect presentation. To provide a good dining experience. The recipe and the consistency. All that which actually matters.

Uttar Dakshin by Naivedhyam brings ‘alu paratha’ and ‘sambar’ on the table, thankfully doesn’t serve it together. Menu provides mostly snack items from North and South states of India. We explored the south today mostly and were not at all disappointed.

The Thatte Idli

Out of the 4 dishes we ordered, this one was officially the ‘Rajnikant’. It was the best. The super soft, flavourful idli melted in our mouth. Sambar was different than the typical Nagpurian palate ( we are raised with Gokul and Veeraswami), but is equally yummy
but not super spicy. I do think Nagpuians may have an opinion about it. Chutneys served were equally good. Presentation was fantastic!

The plain Rava Dosa

It was Super crispy with a beautiful netted texture and golden glow. We loved the slight herbs mixed in the batter. Served hot and fresh with sambar and chutney. Just wish oil was a bit in control.

The Filter Coffee
Even the rain gods agreed, there was a short rain shower this afternoon at Nagpur as I sipped the quintessential drink when I go south. It did wake up someone up there. They have bought Bengaluru to Nagpur - can’t promise on rain, but coffee will make you happy.

Dahi Samosa
Ventured a bit to north and got a warning form waiter immediately - Sir talk half a portion if you are already full.
He was absolutely correct. They have jumbo size samosas! Potato’s filled hot samosa crushed and immersed in sweet fresh dahi, topped with sweet tamarind chutney, topped with sev for that extra crunch. A bit sweet for my taste but it was again quality stuff.
Missed mint-cilantro chutney, onions, spices and chaat masala you would typically get in Delhi. It could have been more ‘chat pat’ and less sweet. I may not have this one again here. Personal preference.

The Pineapple Sheera
Aka Kesari Bhaat
This one was the ‘ Silk Smita’( Go Google :)). Served hot, full of spices and absolutely sweet. This one was not the typical load of essence and less pineapple recipe. We could taste pineapple in every bite. We were amazed by the quality of Ghee and saffron used in prep. It was delicious. Freshness of this desert brought it to the top to give some serious takkar to Rajni :)

We left paying less than 500 Rs. for a super delicious and healthy (well an occasional fling with SilkSmita is good for health). I found the cost very pocket friendly for the quality and quantity of food.

The ambience here is casual. Interiors are good, not super fancy and service is impeccable. Thumbs up for training waiters well and we heard few chefs in kitchen are form Bengaluru, which explains the authenticity of dishes served.

I am not sure how the ‘North’ on menu is but I am sure ‘ All the Rajni fans’ will love this one.
