Rice preparations are very dry, to the point that you feel tortured eating after a few spoonfuls.
Avoid.
Have tried the following items from their familiar sounding menu:
NON-VEG KEBAB PLATTER @ Rs 475 – This had mainly chicken kebabs – the malai tikka, the hyderabadi tikka, the tandoori and chicken seekh. Although I personally prefer only the mutton or lamb seekh for both taste & texture, theirs wasn’t too bad. The other three kebabs were excellent – freshly grilled, mildly but flavourfully spiced with the de rigueur cheese shaving on top. However, compared to their usual decent pricing, I thought this was a bit too much especially since there wasn’t any meat other than chicken in that platter.
ALOO KULCHA @ Rs 50 – This was a tandoori aloo paratha of sorts using the kulcha dough. Sometimes many joints make it too thick so at I first cautiously ordered just one here. It was so beautiful that I was compelled to order it a second time in the same meal leading to serious overeating. Soft fluffy aloo filling in a tandoori bread that had received the perfect baking in the clay oven. A must order.
ONION PARATHA @ Rs 50 – This was beautiful too with some of the finely chopped onion kneaded into the dough and then a paratha disc rolled out from that. You could decipher the part translucent part violet onion bits in this bejewelled paratha.
VEG KADHAI @ Rs 150 – I wouldn’t have ordered this had it not been for the fact that we already had enough chicken for the day and the dal I wanted was apparently not available (I was actually innocently informed that the sous chefs had forgotten to soak the black lentils earlier so the dal makhani couldn’t be prepared for the dinner service!!!). On Shivaji’s (the really sweet guy who is likely to take your order here) excellent advice I chose this from their vegetarian offerings. I hadn't been keen on a paneer dish that evening so had turned down his many recommendations for it but when he described this one and cajoled me to try it, I said yes. He then sheepishly warned me it may have some paneer bits – poor chap must have thought I am allergic to paneer or something so vociferous had been my refusal to sample any paneer dish that night. I quickly reassured him that it would be fine just the way they cook it but he does get brownie points for frankly & patiently discussing this with me. The dish itself was really delicious – one of the better veg kadhai I have sampled. It is such a generic dish to be found in restaurants of all varieties that you kinda stop having any expectation from it – but this one was truly lovely to partake of that evening. It was perfectly complementary to both the platter and the tandoori breads our table had ordered.
CHICKEN PESHWARI KEBAB @ Rs 170 – I wish I knew why the dish was so named – a general tendency to name barbecued meats with obvious NWFP antecedents after an arbitrary region in that area I guess! It was a lovely kebab – a trifle dry & top a bit charred as boneless morsels of chicken do tend to get in the hot oven sometimes – but only a bit. It was a good sized plate and the kebabs were neatly delicious.
MUTTON DUM BIRYANI @ Rs 140 per portion – Wonderful biryani with such a lovely light masala, so unlike the kind of biryanis they serve in joints of such nature in this part of the country. The rice was A-grade long grained basmati which had been cooked so perfectly that they deserve full marks for it. The layering of the plain rice, the mutton element and the saffron rice was lovely. It was obvious that good quality oil & ghee were used in its preparation since it didn’t leave that greasy residue that coats the tongue most offensively at other places. The one thing I did miss was the well defined garnish of birista or the crisp fried onions – I would have liked to see more of that.
EGG BIRYANI @ Rs 150 per portion – This is one of the favourites of my friend who had recommended the place to me so I ordered it along with the one above because Shivaji did say that the above would be portion size enough only for one and so would not suffice for our table. This was a bigger helping of biryani than the mutton one which arrived in a smaller vessel. It had two boiled eggs as part of the biryani. I could see why this would be anyone’s favourite. However, those two biryanis together were quite a bit of rice so we actually had to happily get half of it parcelled:-)
The joint is small and at two levels but it does not feel cramped – it is quite bright and the ceiling is high too. They have the kitchen upstairs so the lower dining area is that much expansive as a result. One huge omission is that of air conditioning though – they try to make up by having numerous fans but I wonder how it works during the day. I have only ever visited at night time so had a very pleasant time but I do think it could get too warm in the day. They have some tables out in the front too – I have seen people enjoying sitting there in the breezy evening hours. They also seem to do good takeaway/delivery business.
I have received extremely warm service at the hands of Shivaji and Kailash. Shivaji has attended on us every time we have dined here and is an adorably sweet, eager to assist chap. One of the reasons for the review is to cajole residents of the neighbouring colonies to drop in here or get a home delivery done because I feel small non-branded independent eateries need the support & encouragement of the local population and would find it very difficult to survive otherwise. The place may not be grand but it is clean, bright and has wonderful food. The service may not be at the hands of someone suited-booted with a hotel management degree but those guys are warm, attentive & caring and that counts a lot more in my books. Do give them a try!
KBC – no it is named not after the TV show but abbreviates ‘Kebabs, Biryani, Curries’– is a small, fairly modest joint at the Mankar Chowk at Kalewadi phata where the Pride Purple Square is located. It was one of my friends who is a resident of the area on whose excellent recommendation I first tried this joint. I have now sampled something from all the three categories of food they claim to specialize in so thought it was time for a review. It may be a modest joint but it delivered big on both the food and the service every time.
