Rama Varma Union Club, Kottayam – Founded in 1881 by Diwan Peshkar T. Rama Rao under the patronage of Maharaja Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma, the Rama Varma Union Club is one of Kerala’s oldest social institutions. It was originally modeled after European clubs to foster camaraderie, physical fitness, and cultural interaction among members—and was later renamed in royal honor . Located on Union Club Road near Thirunakkara Temple and the Mini Civil Station in Kottayam, the club offers a rich mix of historic charm and modern amenities . On-site facilities include three clay tennis courts, wooden indoor badminton courts (one of the oldest and finest in South India), billiards and cards rooms, and a fully air‑conditioned gym and sports lounge with a giant projector—popular for events and leisure gatherings . Patrons can dine in the club’s bar and restaurant and even stay in its guest accommodation offering air‑conditioned double rooms in Kottayam and a scenic waterfront annex at Kumarakom with boating and backwater access . I have been regularly visiting Ramaverma Club for last ten years. It is a wonderful homely place with very courteous staff. It has been nicely renovated. I will prefer Ramaverma Club at Kochi any time. Regards, Col P George Thomas (Veteran )
